Current Activities of NiGP Program

The Australian General Practice Network (AGPN) recognises the contribution that nurses can make to general practice and primary care. We will continue to work closely with the Network and other key stakeholders to provide leadership and advocacy to all nurses working in primary care.

Recent achievements include:

National advocacy for the nursing profession in the current health reform transition to primary health care organisations.
Working collaboratively with the National Heart Foundation and the Lung Foundation in the development of resources for general practice nurses.
Publication of the biannual 2009 National Practice Nurse Survey Report and a 2009 Supplemental report.
Development of a national Orientation Program for nurses new to general practice.
Development of an Online Orientation Package which supports nurses new to general practice.
Currently this is being updated and will be available soon
Development of an e-Learning Training Package for practice nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers, to enhance their role in chronic disease care under Medicare Item 10997
Development of Nursing in General Practice Orientation and Recruitment Resource.
Development of a framework to provide a consistent approach and quality experience for student nurses during clinical placement in general practice.
Promotion of free workshops on responding to domestic and family violence. These workshops are delivered by Lifeline and focus on training nurses and AHWs on how to recognise and respond to patients affected by domestic violence.
Annual collection of nurse data from each division.
